Mold is the core equipment of continuous casting machine, which is responsible for solidifying liquid steel.  In the process of continuous casting, the inner surface of the mould copper tube is in contact with the high-temperature liquid steel, which is easily affected by chemical corrosion, thermal erosion and friction between the mould and the billet shell. The thermal deformation and surface scratch of the copper tube are easy to occur, which affects the continuous casting production and deteriorates the quality of the billet.  Due to different varieties and management systems of production, scrap standards of mold copper tubes of different iron and steel manufacturers are not the same.  Usually, the amount of steel in mold is used to calibrate the mold life. The maturity life of copper tube in mold is mainly determined by two important parameters, namely the taper and wear, but in fact, these two parameters also affect each other.

In order to eliminate or reduce the influence of air gap, the mold cavity should be designed with a certain inverted taper according to the different shrinkage characteristics of steel grade and the degree of thermal deformation of mold copper plate.  Pour mould taper should follow the following principles: the choice of steel solidification shrinkage properties, mold inner cavity shape should maximize the actual shape of solidification shell is suitable for the crystallizer, make the whole mold gas gap thickness to a minimum level, to improve the effect of heat transfer in the mould, in order to guarantee the uniformity of the thickness of the solidified shell in the mould and mould under the shell thickness.  After the use of copper tube, if the maintenance span can not restore the mold taper to the standard range required by the steel mill, then the life of copper tube of mold is expired.
