Mold is an important equipment of continuous caster, which plays an important role in solidification and forming of molten steel. In the process of continuous casting, the inner surface of the copper mould tube is in contact with the high-temperature liquid steel. Under the comprehensive influence of chemical corrosion, thermal erosion and friction with the billet, the copper pipe is prone to thermal deformation and surface damage, which affects the smooth progress of continuous casting production and worsens the billet quality. Due to different production varieties and management systems, the abandonment criteria of mold copper pipes in iron and steel manufacturers are also different. The service life of the mold is usually determined by the amount of steel passing through the mold. The determination of the service life of the mold copper pipe is mainly based on two important parameters, namely, inverted taper and wear. In fact, these two parameters also affect each other.
In order to eliminate or reduce the influence of air gap, the inner cavity of mold shall be designed into a certain inverted taper according to different shrinkage characteristics of steel and thermal deformation degree of copper plate. The selection of the inverted taper of the mold should follow the solidification shrinkage characteristics of the steel grade. The shape of the inner cavity of the mold should greatly adapt to the actual shape of the solidified green body in the mold, reduce the gap thickness in the whole mold, improve the heat transfer effect of the mold, and ensure the uniformity of the green body thickness in the mold and the green body thickness at the lower opening of the mold. After the copper pipe is used, if the inspection span cannot repair the inverted taper of the mold to the standard range required by the steel plant, the service life of the copper pipe of the mold is determined to be expired.
