The baking of graphite electrode is a heat treatment process in which the pressed raw product is heated at a certain heating rate in the protective medium in the heating furnace under the condition of isolating the air.

The purpose of baking is:

(1) Eliminate V.M

Graphite electrodes that use coal pitch as a binder generally emit about 10% of volatile matter after baking.

(2) Binder coking

Raw graphite electrode products are baked under certain process conditions to coke the binder and form a coke network between the aggregate particles. Under the same conditions, the higher the coking rate, the better the quality.

(3) Fixed geometric form

The ultimate goal is to keep the shape of the graphite electrode unchanged even if the temperature rises again.

(4) Reduce resistivity

On the basis of 1 and 2, the resistivity of graphite electrode drops drastically.

(5) The volume shrinks further

After baking, the diameter of the graphite electrode shrinks by about 1%, the length shrinks by about 2%, and the volume shrinkage is 2-3%.
